Local baker will be featured on Food Network Show

Nine and a half years ago, Timmy Norman, owner of Cakebuds Bakery in Johnson City, said that in 10 years he wanted to be on the Food Network.

Last week, the downtown business owner announced his dream had come to fruition.

Norman said on Facebook Live via the Cakebuds Bakery page on Dec. 21 that he and part-time co-worker Chris Roberts will be featured on an episode of the new Food Network Show, “Winner Cake All,” hosted by celebrity chef, Giada De Laurentiis.

“It’s really unbelievable. You dream of things like that and you pinch yourself like, ‘Is this really happening?” said Norman.

The competition features four two-person teams competing in a timed challenge. While Norman can’t reveal a lot of details about the show, he said the cake they make on the show is a sculpted cake like the ones the bakery is known for.

Norman said that he has received a large outpouring of support since the announcement in numbers that surprised even him. He said he was amazed by how fast word spread and how many people now know about the bakery who didn’t before.

He also hopes that the show helps to shine some light on downtown.

“I was downtown before it was cool,” said Norman, “The more it grows, the more we grow.”

Norman traded in his graphic design job for cake-making full-time at his Cakebuds Bakery downtown about seven years ago. The bakery supplies more than just those well-known custom cakes. It’s a walk-in shop where customers can stop by and have some small treats or pick up a cake for a special occasion.

Cakebuds Bakery is at 410 South Roan St. in Johnson City. Follow them on Facebook for more updates regarding the premiere of the episode featuring Norman. Learn more about Cakebuds Bakery at the company’s website, mycakebuds.com.

“Winner Cake All,” premieres Monday at 10 p.m. on the Food Network.
