Co-Starters Graduates: ShowerCrown

showercrownJohnson City’s summer Co-Starters course, a 9-week business accelerator program, concluded at the end of July. Hosted by JRH Brewing, there was a great turnout on hand to watch 5 of the Co-Starters participants give great pitches where you could clearly see the passion in each one of them.

This week we’re going to talk about Co-Starters graduate, Jim Hughes, and his invention, ShowerCrown.

The following are excerpts from his ETSY and Facebook Page, as well as testimonials from Jim.

“ShowerCrown got it’s auspicious start when I told my brother Tom, builder of No. 1.) that “if we could just make this thing (We still didn’t know yet what it was called) easier to install, women will love it.” That was 2014. We both had full time jobs, family responsibilities, honey-do lists, home improvement projects, etc. I still didn’t know why it looked so good. I just knew that it did! Roughly a year later, I shared a picture of our invention on Facebook where it elicited generally positive remarks. One of those remarks sparked a google search with a very unexpected answer. I vaguely remember ranting around my bathroom telling Sandi (the best thing ever to happen in my life) that this was going to change the world…..
What it is and what it does.

* An immediate, contemporary, modern upgrade to the decor of any bathroom.

* The easiest installation of any kind of bathroom product, period.

What started out as an off the wall “ Do it yourself ” project, evolved into a truly “unique” bathroom decor trend. Our mission is simple. Design, craft, and market a variety of “custom-built” shower valances, (also called shower cornices) that any homeowner with minimal skills can easily install, using common tools, yet always get a craftsman finished look. Add immediate decorative impact and value to your home’s bathroom, in about 15 minutes. You will “love” the result! And when you do….you’ll share it with your friends.”

I asked Jim about his experience with Co-Starters and how it helped direct his business:

“I became aware of the Co-starters program from the KEC in Knoxville. I have been searching for quite some time to find resources in this area for new startups. As far as the program is concerned, it was great. The class covers a lot of ground that every entrepreneur will have to learn or know at some part along the startup journey. The live speakers from previous classes are a great way to show current class enrollees that the process works. Maybe one day I’ll get successful enough to be asked back to speak to the class.”
